Leech Therapy

Leech therapy is gaining ground for treating specific ailments...

You may find it hard to believe but Leech, which is a small segmented worm, can play a role in curing musculoskeletal disorders, skin diseases, inflammatory conditions, chronic headaches, osteo-arthritis, sinusitis, knee joint pain, tennis elbow, frozen shoulder, gangrene, chronic wounds, alopecia, sprains etc.

Leech therapy is an ancient ayurvedic practice and involves usage of medicinal Leeches of the species ‘Hirudo Medicinalis’. These Leeches are red striped and olive coloured. Main reasons for Leech therapy gaining ground is that it is safer, less painful and there are no side effects.

How does the treatment by Leeches work?

The Leech is placed on the body area requiring the treatment. Leech bite is not painful, just a pin prick is felt initially. Over a period of 20 to 30 minutes, the Leech will suck out 5 and 15 ml of blood which is 4 – 6 times it’s body weight. Once the Leech is fully fed, it separates itself from the body and falls off.

Leech therapy’s effectiveness is believed firstly due to the Leech being able to differentiate between pure and impure blood, secondly due to the Leech's liking to get fed on impure blood and thirdly due to anti-inflammatory, antibiotic and analgesic substances contained in the saliva secreted by the Leech while it sucks blood. Leech therapy also reduces coagulation of blood, thereby stimulating blood circulation after surgery. The therapy reduces swelling faster, thus speeding up healing.
