Work on a Cruise Ship

Cruise holidays are an exciting form of travel…

Cruise travels are highly popular with holiday-makers around the world.  Over 20 million travellers take a cruise every year. To serve the market scores of cruise lines operate and prominent among them are Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Celebrity, Cunard, Star, Princess, Costa, P & O,  Holland America etc.

Cruise vacations score over regular vacations in many respects. Cruise vacations offer better ‘value for money’ and in addition to sight-seeing while the ship remains docked in port, there are plenty of attractions within the cruise ship itself for entertainment and leisurely pursuits. Unlike regular holidays on cruise holidays one doesn’t have to check-in and check-out of hotels in different cities.

Opportunities in kitchen and service areas of cruise lines…

Crew is required to man on-board facilities like kitchens, restaurants, bars, housekeeping, casino, security etc. You must have completed 10+2 education and have to pass an interview at one of the cities in India. Most of the recruiters have training schools in India, where new joiners are trained so their skills are upgraded before they go on-board the cruise ship.

The glamourous part of this job is that you are able to see many different countries during a cruise. While the ship is in port, you can do sight-seeing on-shore during your off-hours. On-board there are separate recreational facilities for the crew such as crew bars, crew gyms, internet cafes, party areas etc. During your off-time you can seek to upgrade your skills by taking up language courses, business courses etc.

Career with a cruise line is rewarding both in monetary terms as well as professional terms. The pay is good and since food and accommodation is free on-board, the pay is saved almost entirely and it is also tax-free since a cruise line employee is considered as a Non-Resident Indian. Each contract lasts for 6 to 9 months.

On the flip side, it must be noted that work involves long hours and you would have to share a tiny cabin with your mates and sleep on a bunk-bed. Bachelors may be able to cope better since it is not possible for spouses to accompany crew members.
