Job for Disabled Handicapped

Disabled persons need jobs for livelihood…

Nearly 100 million Indians are disabled in some form or other: visually-impaired,  mobility challenged, hearing / speech disabled and mentally challenged. Despite 3% of all Government jobs being reserved for disabled persons and despite private sector striving to provide employment to the physically impaired, only a small fraction among the disabled actually have jobs. This is a poignant situation because like everyone else, the disabled too need jobs for dignified living.

Recently Parliament hiked job quota to 4% and increased the number of recognised disabilities to 21, which include acid attack and Parkinson's disease. The Government would also be introducing a 'Universal Identity Card for the Disabled' to enable the disabled to avail benefits without any hitch.

Studies have revealed that PWD (Persons with Disabilities) have high level of loyalty and dedication towards their employers. Hopefully we will see many more EWD (Employees with Disabilities) in the corporate sector in times to come. Companies active in employing PWDs include Jubiliant FoodWorks, IBM India, EY, Dell, Accenture India, SAP Labs, Flex etc. These and other companies are also working to sensitise their employees so that unconscious biases about differently-abled people are removed.

How should the physically impaired go about to get a job?

There are many NGOs who are working to alleviate the problems that the handicapped face. Specifically, the NGOs who help disabled get employment, are covered in the Resources section below.

The major task for these NGOs is to improve the employability skills of the disabled. This is achieved by providing training in English language, computer usage, office routine, vocational training etc. Training schools have been set up where the handicapped are exposed to short-term training modules.

On completion of training, efforts are made by the NGOs to place the persons with private sector companies who receive incentives from Government on employing the disabled. The NGOs also encourage self-employment by the persons if the trade or skill learnt can be practiced independently on their own.

The NGOs try to secure jobs not just for persons who receive in-house training, but also for other disabled persons who approach them.
