Affordable Indian art…
Contemporary Indian art has made its mark on world’s art scene, but the average Indian looks for the opportunity to buy art that is affordable. Galleries and fairs have been making affordable art available in order to rope in first-time buyers. This is achieved by showcasing works by upcoming artists and undiscovered artists. Also smaller-sized artworks of established artists are sometimes available at affordable prices.
Since artists have to wait for months and years to secure slots for solo shows at reputed art galleries in India’s metros, online galleries have stepped in to make life easier for artist and buyers. By browsing through these websites, buyers have a wide range to choose from. The flip side is that buying decision will have to be made based on the picture and without physically seeing the painting.
Aspiring first time collectors can also go in for Serigraphs. Serigraphs are prints of artworks by reputed artists created by silkscreen process. These are made in limited numbers and are numbered, dated and signed by the artists. Serigraphs cost about 3-5% of the original painting.
Aspects to keep in mind while buying art…
Do not buy art with investment as the primary motive. Buy paintings which captivate you, so that you have a winner in your hands. Study the background of the artist and his technique. Buy only from reputed galleries who issue a bill as well as an original Authenticity Certificate signed by the artist. Beware of fakes and ensure that the painting’s provenance is genuine. Check the quality of canvas and paint used. Check with the dealer whether any maintenance is required on the artwork.
