Donation of used textbooks intended for schools, colleges and professional institutes are of great benefit to students who cannot afford to buy new books. If the mission to spread education among all has to succeed, academic books should be available for free to those who lack resources to buy.
Among all categories, the need is most acute for used school textbooks because of sheer number of poor students involved, numbering in lakhs if not crores. A donor whose child is in primary school can donate books every year until completion of high school. The beneficiary would be a underprivileged student who pursues school with one year’s lag.
The other aspect is that our schools and colleges lack quality educational and informative books. This prevents students from acquiring knowledge on diverse subjects. Partly this problem is mitigated by NGOs setting up formal and informal libraries.
Academic books for medical, engineering courses and competitive examinations are generally expensive and receiving these as donation is a great boon for deserving students with limited means.
