Walking for Fitness

Walking – The simplest and yet the most effective form of exercise for fitness…

Walking is probably the ‘Holy Grail’ of fitness because it is simple, does not require training or any equipment and yet does much for your physical fitness. Walking has to be done daily for at least 20 to 30 minutes and it should be done at a brisk pace.

From the fitness point of view, the advantages accruing due to walking are weight control, physical agility, improved stamina and general wellness. Equally important benefit is that walking reduces the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, colon cancer and other diseases.

For those who cannot spare half-an-hour for a walk can still consider walking during work, taking calls standing, taking stairs instead of a lift, striding from home to train/bus station, walking during lunch break, short stroll after dinner, walking with pet etc. To make the walk interesting listen to music through earphones or find a walking partner. The target should be 10,000 steps a day.

Initiatives to encourage walking…

‘Max Bupa Walk for Health’ which is now in it's 5th year, will hold the walks in Bangalore, Dehi and Mumbai during February 2017. Adults (regular walkers) can enter the 5 km walk, while children and senior citizens can take part in the 5 km walk. Route will be announced on the website. Over the years the walks have gained great popularity.

How can people who are at the workplace for the whole day, motivated to walk? In comes Stepathlon, a programme is for companies who sign-on. The objective is to encourage company employees to walk at least 10,000 steps per day. Employees form 5 member teams and note their step count from Pedometer which everyone carries all the time. Step counts are converted into km and teams compete in the 100-days virtual race with other teams in the company. Similarly, companies compete with other companies in the country and around the world.
