Women can return to a second career after a break...

Women quit jobs and take a career break due to various obligations and commitments: marriage, motherhood, sabbatical for higher education, and family matters. Such breaks can vary from a few months to many years. According to industry estimates, over 300 million women are looking to enter workforce across the country.

When reason for taking the break no longer exists, a feeling of stagnation and a yearning for recognition propels women from taking up a second career or a flexi-career. Companies also are eager to take them on in view of their professional experience, skill sets and an awareness of work culture prevailing in organizations.

On account of these advantages, in their new positions women are able to get oriented faster and deliver results sooner. It is also known that women returning to work are less attrition-prone because they place greater value on retaining the second career. 

Companies and recruitment agencies are crafting second career programmes...

In order to attract this talent pool of women, organizations and placement agencies offer incentives like mentoring, internship, work-from-home, flexible schedules, job rotations, assignment based work etc.

To motivate women considering a second or flexi-career, companies hold workshops, skill building programmes and events. Although challenges like fast changing technology landscape and adjustment problem with younger colleagues exist, employers are taking steps to address these concerns.  

Flexible (or Flexi) employment involves working on short-duration projects or on permanent/semi-permanent basis. Payment can be on job basis or retainership or salary. Women find flexi-jobs convenient when it comes to balancing home and work. Such jobs are particularly ideal for new mothers with toddlers and young children.

Second career careers can be availed directly from companies (Tatas, Godrej, Accenture etc) or through recruiting agencies (Sheroes, Avtar I-Win etc) as indicated in Resources section below.
