Study Abroad? Learn Cooking

Increasing numbers of Indian students study abroad…

For overseas study, Indian students are flocking to Universities in US, UK, Australia and other countries like never before. In fact, India sends second largest contingent to US after China, year after year. While most of the students leave India to pursue graduate courses, smaller numbers pursue undergraduate programmes.

Since dormitory-stay in campus is relatively expensive, students prefer to stay off-campus in apartments shared with other students. These apartments tend to be located closer to the campus, being either within walking distance or a short bus ride away.

Learning to cook is of great advantage for students going overseas…

Students living off-campus prefer to cook on their own due to a multiplicity of factors: Self-cooking is cost-effective as compared to eating restaurant food. Controlling food costs is important for Indian students since many of them are from middle-class backgrounds, financing overseas study through loans.

Secondly self-cooked food is definitely hygienic and nutritious as compared to fast food or restaurant food. Finally, Indian students accustomed to spice-based food cannot carry-on with bland western diet on a daily basis for long.

If you are a student planning to go abroad soon for studies, do not forget to learn the basics of Indian cooking and also learn to cook a few popular vegetarian and/or non-vegetarian dishes. You may learn from your mother or alternately join the short-term cookery classes conducted by the expert cooks which are listed below in Resources.
