University Rankings India US

Ranking plays an important role while selecting a university or school for study…

Students wishing to pursue undergraduate or graduate courses in India or abroad need to choose their college, school or university wisely. Factors which are considered are the availability of the desired program of study, the location of the institution and the costs of attending etc.

However, one of the most important factors is the reputation of the institution. Here’s where the published rankings come into picture. The rankings compare universities based on certain parameters. Each ranking system has a different set of objective criteria as well as weightage given to each criterion.

It may be useful to refer to multiple ranking systems, gain an understanding of the methodology used by each system and take your own informed decision which corresponds wth your academic needs. Do not be guided solely by rankings because a school with a lower ranking may in fact be the best choice for your particular circumstances.

Ranking of universities and schools in India and US…

The newly-launched National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) pertaining to universities and institutes in India has been approved by the Government of India. The other ranking systems from US and other countries are unofficial because they are by publishers of magazines and books or private entities.

For the first time, UK-based ratings body Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) has also ranked countries. Under the first-ever Higher Education System & Strength Rankings (HESSR), the US, UK and Germany respectively secured the first 3 ranks among the 50 countries rated.

Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore and four IITs - Mumbai, Delhi, Madras and Kanpur - figure in the list of Asia's top 50 universities, as per QS Rankings for 2016.
