Over the past some years, there has been an alarming rise in number of cancer patients in India. And for the poor the disease is especially cruel considering the high cost of consultations, tests, scans, biopsies etc. Somehow, the poor manage to raise funds at least for the treatment by pooling their meagre resources along with financial assistance from charities.
However the major problem is accomodation. Better cancer hospitals are in metros and renting even a small room is unaffordable for many poor rural folk. Due to this, patients and accompanying families stay near hospitals in makeshift shanties by the roadside, with primitive sanitaation arrangements.
