There are 4 specific NLP techniques which can be of great help and they are micro-muscle mirroring (MMM), photoshopping your memory, reversing the terrible and lastly, training Pavlov's dog. If it is important for you to gain another person's attention, practice MMM wherein you start with the intention that you are the other person and 'micro mirror' him or her. When something troubles you, do not fight the thought but retouch or photoshop it to look at that matter in a positive light and viola, you'll feel better.
When you are feeling terrible, concentrate to note whether the feeling is emerging from head, chest, stomach or any other part of the body and the direction in which the feeling is moving. Then, close your eyes, imagine a happy moment from the past and use the happy feeling to reverse the sad thought. Pavlov's dog still salivated when bell rang even though there was no food. Similarly, smile even when there is no reason and the very smile will take you to a happy frame of mind.
