Urban living needs services of housemaids, drivers, security guards…
In cities, with both spouses working, hired help such as housemaid, cook, nanny, aayah, baby-sitter and caretaker have become essential to take care of house work as well as to look after young children or aged parents. In addition, need arises for driver, security guard, delivery boy, servant, gardener, peon, plumber, electrician and others for odd-jobs.
There is a high demand for above referred informal-sector jobs in India's burgeoning cities. Yet things are far from rosy for employers or the hired help. Hired help do not stick around for long, change jobs frequently and are prone to take unplanned leave to go to their native places or to attend to family matters. Employers too at times do not treat the hired help fairly in respect of working conditions, wages, working hours etc.
Housemaids top the list in terms of number of jobs available. Housemaid's work may include any or all of the following activities: sweeping and mopping, dusting, cooking, washing utensils, washing clothes, child care and elderly care. The maid may be living-in or working during day-time or working for an hour or two during the day.
With the massive increase in car ownership in India, demand for drivers has grown exponentially. Many startups target this rent-a-driver segment by providing vetted drivers to drive your car on hourly or daily or monthly basis at affordable prices. In view of the perils of drunk-drving, people are availing driver services to be driven from restaurant to residence, after a party.
The role of domestic help placement agencies…
Placement agencies are aiming at bringing order to an unorganized sector. Most of them list out on their websites details of job seekers available as well as details of jobs posted by employers. Based on the matches made, the agency may send one or more candidates for interview. Other agencies do not publicly publish such details but deal directly with job-seekers and employers.
Non-profit agencies do not charge any fee whereas other agencies charge a fee. In most cases, monthly compensation is paid by the employer to the hired help, whereas in other cases the hired help remains on the rolls of the agency with the employer paying the agency every month who remunerate the hired help after deductions. Recruiting agencies source the candidates through word-of-mouth, referrals from existing hires, leads from NGOs etc. They claim to verify the antecedents of the job seeker directly or indirectly, but it is in your interest to make independent enquiries, particularly when it comes to to housemaid, nanny etc.
Placement agencies are listed in the Resources section below and most of them serve the respective cities wherein they are based.
