Drive Abroad with IndiaLicense

Self-drive holidays are a delight for many…

In an organized packaged tour, you are constrained to visit limited tourist attractions and time spent at each attraction too is regulated. During travel you are confined to a coach or bus and you may not find fellow-tourists of your group to be of the same wavelength.

In contrast, advantages of self-drive travels are many, with the only drawback being such tours are expensive as compared to packaged tours. If the cost difference is not a factor, self-drive holidays win hands-down on account of greater comfort as well as privacy and being able to visit places of your liking and spending as much time as you want at those places. Whether the travel is fast-paced or leisurely is entirely up to you and you are spared of waking up at 6 am in order to board the coach departing hotel at 7 am!

Quite a few countries accept Indian driving license!

As can be noted from the Resources section below, an Indian driving license is valid for driving in some of the countries most popular among Indian travelers. Durations vary and in certain cases you would in addition require an International Driving Permit (IDP), which identifies you as a legal holder of an Indian driving license.

An IDP is valid for 1 year from date of issue and it has a photograph of the holder. In India, RTOs in all States are authorized to issue IDPs. The only private-sector organization which is allowed to issue IDPs is Western India Automobile Association (WIAA), which has offices in Mumbai, Pune and Ahmedabad.

You may approach one of these offices with your Indian driving license along with Indian passport, photos and fee. However, WIAA’s office will issue IDP only if license is issued from the same city viz. Ahmedabad office will issue IDP only if license is also issued from Ahmedabad. This means that applicants based in cities other than the three stated, would have to obtain IDP from their local RTOs only.
